ARAB-JEWISH AFTER-SCHOOL CENTER

Moadonit HaShalom serves a mixed group of 30 children ages 41/2 – 11 evenly divided between Arabs and Jews. It is located in an integrated Arab-Jewish quarter of the Hadar Hacarmel neighborhood. The Arab children include Christians, Druze and Muslims; 80% of the Jewish children are from Russian-speaking, single-parent, new-immigrant households. The children benefit from a bilingual staff, a shared building and playground, adjacent classrooms linked by a shared kitchen, and biweekly, joint activities designed to instill in them mutual respect for each other's cultures, traditions and holidays. Funds are  needed in order to provide therapy to the children in the aftermath of Second Lebanon War of July-August 2006; to renovate the playground, which is currently unusable in rainy weather; to supplement the modest equipment budget, which doesn't cover arts and crafts materials, simple birthday gifts, small prizes, or basic school supplies (such as pencils, which the children freely take because their parents either don't -- or can't afford to -- buy them); and to purchase 3 computers, a DVD player to enable the showing of recently donated children's videos, and basic kitchen equipment.
