JEWISH HERITAGE CENTER OF HAIFA AND NORTHERN ISRAEL

The architectural plans call for a renovated Prayer Hall to seat 500; a Wedding Hall for 500-1,000 guests; and the establishment of a Heritage Center to include 3 lecture halls, a Judaica Library and a Judaica Museum that will serve the general public of Haifa and the Israeli North. Public lectures to be offered will include the Jewish obligation to be ethical and moral even in times of war and danger; the relevance of Halakah (Jewish law) to a modern country; the status of women in Judaism; secular-religious relations; and the State of Israel as democratic and Jewish. Features of the original building to be conserved include the arched exterior doorways with studded zinc doors; the French windows admitting maximum natural light; and the spacious sanctuary's double row of four marble pillars each. The soaring acoustic ceiling will be repaired in order to return the echo of prayer to the sanctuary. The building's exterior will be sandblasted to restore its stone façade's radiance and bring out its high-relief carvings of such religious emblems as the prophet Elijah ascending to heaven in his fiery chariot.
