Urban Renewal & Beautification | Port Campus |
The Port Campus project, designed for an
88-dunam area covering four city blocks,
calls for a university campus and lively
student quarter at the heart of the
currently derelict port district. The
plan aims to restore building exteriors;
remodel building interiors to accommodate
dormitories and classrooms; widen sidewalks
to accommodate outdoor cafés; standardize
and manage street and commercial signage;
and attract art galleries, bookstores,
cinemas, coffee houses and storefront gyms.
Five million dollars of municipal funding
has already been invested in building and
street renovations, and contracts have been
signed with the Eugene Feiner Institute for
Maritime Studies, the Pizga Institute,
Tiltan College, and the University of Haifa;
a first influx of students and faculty is
slated for October 2007.
Potential donors are invited to consider
several avenues of investment: a
philanthropic contribution to the HAIFA
FOUNDATION earmarked for converting 5
buildings into dormitories that will house
300 university students; a gift covering
construction of the traffic circle planned
for the campus entrance; or the direct
purchase of a building from its current
municipal, commercial or private owner,
which the buyer may then remodel into
business space.
